How to get people to buy your stuff...
I’ve gotta make this quick…
I just sat down at this fancy hipster coffee shop (there’s plants hanging from the ceiling…)
But there are no power outlets,
So I can’t plug in my laptop.
And it’s about to die.
So, today…
We’re going to (briefly) go over what might be the single most important lesson on running a successful online business:
How to get people to actually buy your stuff.
When’s the last time you went on a date?
If it’s been a couple years for you, think back to your days of romance…
There yet?
Now, think back to how you approached dating…
Did you walk up to someone you’ve never met and ask them to marry you?
Probably (hopefully) not.
That would just be weird, right?
Right.
Unfortunately, this is the same mistake a lot of online business owners make.
They ask people to buy their stuff before they develop a relationship.
Instead, when you approach marketing and sales like dating, you progressively deepen in relationship…
And when the prospect is ready, they buy.
In my online basketball training business we’d have people reading our daily email newsletter for years…
YEARS
…Before finally buying a product from us.
(This was not the norm, but it did happen…)
And the higher priced your product is, the deeper the relationship you’ll usually want to develop.
It’s the reason why creators with large social followings are able to make money.
Because they have a relationship with their audience.
But as soon as they go to run paid ads to try and scale their business, all hell breaks loose and it just doesn’t work…
Because they are trying to get people who they don’t have a relationship with to buy right away.
They’re proposing on the first date.
And that doesn’t work so well does it, Romeo?
So, to recap:
âś“ Develop a relationship through some form of communication (I like email for a number of reasons…)
âś“ Follow up with them (without being creepy or annoying) to deepen relationship.
âś“ Make your offer available so that they know where to find it and how to take action when they’re ready.
Easy peasy.
Here’s what NOT to do:
→ Do not only communicate when you have something to sell.
→ Do not ask people to invest with you before you’ve at least introduced yourself.
→ Do not be creepy, annoying, untruthful, or dishonest.
And there you have it…
How to date.
*Ahem*
How to sell your stuff online.
My battery is about to die and I have a date with the gym.
Have a great Friday.
