The most important piece of business advice

business

“I can sing Bruce Springsteen songs. But nobody wants to pay to hear me sing.”

Years later, after one too many cups of coffee, I finally began to grasp what my first business mentor was trying to teach me...

When it comes to your business (and really anything in life…)

The most powerful position you can take is one where you are singing YOUR song, and not trying to copy someone else’s.

Beyond the pop psychology advice of “just be yourself” there’s a ton of practical insight here.

Why would anyone try and compete with Bruce Springsteen in a Bruce Springsteen contest?

He’s going to win, every time. Duh.

But when you approach your business like it’s an external expression of YOU… and sing YOUR song… you are no longer competing with anyone.

You’re swimming in a sea of 1.

And when you create social media content, write sales copy, appear on podcasts…

You begin to catch the attention of those people who like what you’re singing.

Your audience begins to self-segment around whatever it is you’re talking about.

And if there’s anything that I’ve learned exploring the corners of internet over the past 12+ years, it’s that there’s an audience for everything.

There are people out here who are going to like LOVE your song.

So sing it.

P.S - saw two bears on my hike yesterday in Whistler… so basically, it turned into more of a trail run 🤣
